From Games to Bikes: How Buildbox Supports Cure Leukaemia’s Mission

By July 18, 2024Buildbox

Buildbox.ai was proud to be a sponsor of Cure Leukaemia’s Tour 21 event this year. Leukaemia, a blood and bone marrow cancer, claims a new victim nearly every minute. Research and support organizations like Cure Leukaemia are crucial in advancing treatments, supporting patients, and funding research for better outcomes.

The Tour 21, held June 22 – July 14, is the world’s most demanding cycling challenge. It involves riding the entire Tour de France route just days before the professionals. Kicking off in Florence, the 2024 race had riders trace the same grueling course, logging 3,500km in a mere 21 days. The goal is to raise over £1,000,000 for Cure Leukaemia, the Tour de France charity partner.

Our CEO, Jonathan Zweig, participated in Tour 21, dedicating his ride to his father, Ken, and other Buildbox community members who lost loved ones to leukaemia. Jonathan was only 7 when he got hit with a leukaemia diagnosis. As a survivor himself, his past fuels a deeply personal dedication to supporting others affected by this disease.

This ride was about way more than just cycling – it represented our unity, strength, and hope in battling leukaemia. Although Tour 21 has wrapped up, and Jonathan has crossed the finish line, we’re proud to have been among the many incredible sponsors who stepped up to make this event happen.

Gaming for Good: The Buildbox + Cure Leukaemia Game Jam

In May, the month before Tour 21, we also hosted the Buildbox + Cure Leukaemia Game Jam, inviting developers to create games centered on curing blood cancer. This jam was inspired by “Games for Good ” by Jude Ower and Mathias Gredal Nørvig. Our goal was to raise blood cancer awareness in an engaging way that brought the Buildbox community together.

We required two things: each entry had to include the Cure Leukaemia logo and focus on fighting the disease in some way.

As in previous game jams, five winners were selected. Each received a cash prize, which we matched with an equal donation to Cure Leukaemia in their name.

The games the community was able to create were mind-blowing! Watch the video below to see the Top 5 winners!

Winners

  • 1ST PLACE: Leuko Tales by Darius Immanuel Guerrero
  • 2ND PLACE: Vitalis by Vikas Pawar
  • 3RD PLACE: Health Patrol by Calin Lucian Sirbut
  • 4TH PLACE: Blockaemia by Cristian & Bogdan (Flamin Boat Studio)
  • 5TH PLACE: Leukeminator by Vlad N

Honourable Mention

You can play all these games on the free Buildbox World app! Share the links and try them out. They will definitely inspire and move you. The winner, Leuko Tales, is especially heartfelt and sure to tug at your emotions.

But we didn’t stop at the game jam. To keep the momentum going and further support Cure Leukaemia, we made a special donation for each new Buildbox 4 subscriber gained in May leading up to Tour 21.

Thanks to all the sponsors, riders, Buildbox subscribers, and everyone who participated in making Tour 21 and the Cure Leukaemia Game Jam a success. Your support brings hope to those affected by cancer.

You can visit the Cure Leukaemia Tour 21 website to donate and keep making a difference.
