950 mobile games generated more than $5 million in consumer spend in 2017

Around 950 mobile games generated more than $5 million in annual consumer spend in 2017, according to App Annie.

Speaking at the White Nights Conference in Prague, App Annie head of Central Europe Silvia Buermann revealed some key stats on mobile user behaviour changes over the last few years.

The number of games to make more than $5 million was up from the 600 titles that managed the feat in 2015. The data referenced combined Google Play and App Store revenues.

    Growing market

The figures mark an overall rise in consumer spend on gaming apps across the world, though moreso in some countries than others, as players become more comfortable purchasing items in games.

Buermann also noted that mobile gaming is ‘growing up’, with developers increasingly able to better monetise and engage users, as well as rack up high downloads. Games in countries such as China and Japan in particular perform well in this respect,

Alongside the growth of the mobile games market, the sector has maintained a broad user base. The majority of time spent in these titles is by people older than 25.

In all countries labeled in the chart below, the 25 to 44 age bracket had the most amount of playing time. In the US however both this age group and 45-plus represented equal amounts of play time at 37 per cent each.

Top grossing games are very complex games. With Buildbox you would be able to make maybe 1% of what they have implemented. Definitely not the engine to do something like that. Also, 5 million is pretty low, I think the top 100 grossing games make much more than that, but most of these games also take much more than that to develop.
