Showing different animations upon direction change

Hi,
How can I show different animation if the character moves left or right ?
for example a car doing down a road.
left you see car marks
right you see different car marks
going straight you see different marks

 

It would be your actual animations, or you could use a trail.

 

How about if you want different animations for moving up and down as well as left to right? So far i have only found out how to do the left to right animations but would like to know how to do a different animation for the up and down keys.
